A removal can be one dead pine at the back fence or a big hardwood leaning over a bedroom. Published price guides move mostly with the tree's height and species, and a damaged or diseased tree costs more.

Dead and dying pines

A pine that browns from the top down may have bark beetles. NC State Extension describes needles fading from green to yellow to red, and notes that pitch tubes alone don't identify the beetle. For southern pine beetle it recommends cutting the infested trees plus a buffer of green ones. See pine bark beetles.

Trees near the house or wires

Fayetteville PWC does not remove trees along service drops, the line from the pole to a house. If the drop has to be disconnected while the tree comes down, call PWC Customer Service at (910) 483-1382 on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., at least 24 hours ahead. Trees along the primary lines on the poles are part of PWC's own clearing work, so ask PWC about those first. See trimming and power lines.

What a contractor will want to know

  1. The tree. Pine, oak or other, rough height, and whether it's alive, dead or split.
  2. What's under it. House, fence, shed, driveway, septic field or wires.
  3. Getting in. How wide the gate is, and whether a bucket truck could back up to the tree.
  4. The leftovers. Stump ground or left, wood hauled or left in rounds.

Permits

We could not find the City of Fayetteville's tree rules in a form we can quote. Before removing a large tree inside the city, ask Planning & Zoning at (910) 433-1612. Outside the city, ask the town or county. See tree rules.
